Sack Cotterill?

Published on February 1st, 2012

Frank Clark was vice-chairman of the League Managers Association.

The LMA has been saying for years that managers shouldn’t be sacked – two years isn’t enough time for them to make their mark.

Cotterill has a three and a half year contract.

Sack him? Not going to happen.

Its not the manager that needs to go… its not the players or the chairman or the board… The only person who should leave our “once great” club… Is the guy who owns it…yet sits back and watches it burn in wake of his poor decisions. TAXI for Doughty!!

if cotterill isnt sacked we will be in division 1 probably division 2 by the time his contract ends.
The LMA surely recognises that abject failure is a just reason to sack a manager.
Why should they be guaranteed employment for failure the vast majority of other jobs and careers don’t have this protection

True Billy I hear what your saying… but surely there comes a time when the club has to ‘out its foot on the ball’ and actually give somebody a fair crack of the whip? Forest had cloughie for 18years and thrived since he left we must have had 10 managers… no consistentcy, and even if forst could afford to sack cotterill (which i dont think they can) Who would you bring in to do the job?? theres no money to spend and not many players will be attracted to a club with no cash, no ambition and no clue. Billy Davies would struggle to sort out the mess the teams in now.
Even ‘OL BIG-ED’ Himself would have nightmares with this lot!!!!

Well if Cotterill is not going to be sacked, could someone please tell him how to manage a football team……

LOOK IM A DIE HARD RED COTTERIL HAS TO GO BUT WE CANT AFFORD TO SACK HIM ID PUT HIM ON GARDENING LEAVE AND LET ODRISCOL RUN TINGS N MAYBE GET KEANO ALONGSIDE HIM TILL END OF SEASON

Why sack Cotterill its the players – he has a good one in O Driscoll – Mc Claren brought in players ill suited to the championship apart from Reid and poor and in experienced back room staff.

I agree can’t afford to sack him so put him on gardening leave & hand over to Sean O’Driscoll.

The dealings of the last couple of weeks have been very interesting and will hopefully hope to ‘make’ Cotterill. He has his own man now for a number two and he’s done some tinkering to the squad which now gives it the balance he’s been craving. We now have 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 9 midfielders and 7 strikers. We have players with experience of Championship Promotion pushes, the Premier League, International and even Champions League in our side. The playing staff are good enough to keep us up, however I have major doubts about the manager and his coaching staff (bar O’Driscoll).

Thanks rippey89 – nice to hear some positives. I know I’m struggling to find them…

  10. Posted by rippey89 on February 1st, 2012, 11:56

Haha, it’s far more in hope than expectation, but now he’s got something resembling what he’s been asking for. Plus with the signing of Higgingbottom, playing for Pulis for the last 4 years hopefully his hoofs will be far more accurate than the aimless rubbish Lynch was launching last night! ;)

I honestly think our problems are with the backroom staff rather than the manager. I’m convinced we miss Fairclough/Ned etc. more than we miss Billy Davies, and Davies himself would make zero difference to our current predicament, although I know I’m in a minority there.

I was very concerned last night, although i think the team that finished the game looked much mroe blaanced than the team that started it.
I was more concerned by SC interview post game. He sounded like he didnt have a clue. Not like a manager with drive and determination. If the manager does not believe how can the players?

  12. Posted by billy warnock on February 1st, 2012, 12:10

if cotterill is not sacked or out of Forest in some shape or form (you still have to pay salaries on garden leave!!) and is still here in 3.5 years then we will be in division 1 probably 2, we will lose £5m a year by going into division 1, unless he is on stupid money (wouldnt surprise me if Marthur has done the deal) then get rid now! You do not have to pay his contract in full a negotiated ‘compromise’ agreement would be put in place.
Funny we paid Pompey compensation for this abject manager (speak to any true Pompey fans to get their views) what a shambles, this club is being killed by a handful of people, its a disgrace

  13. Posted by Nick on February 1st, 2012, 12:28

I wholeheartedly agree with billy warnocks last comments, a few (2?!) are killing this great club, but I’m afraid its already too late to retrieve it? Why was Reid put on the right last night with Anderson on the left? How does this make sense? The whole game was a complete shambles last night, how can SC say we had chances to winit even when they went in fornt? We don’t look like scoring at home again all season!

I for one living in Notts and working in stoke and being a die hard forest lad,the stoke faithful are laughing at the mess Steve Quitrall has they call him as got us into.Billy proved without a shadow of doubt he is Forest through and through and would love to come back.
If Billy doesnt i am available and will do it for my current salary which would save the club millions.Cotteril out

  15. Posted by John stubbs on February 1st, 2012, 13:09

Oh and the Stoke boys think that higginbottom is a quality signing.
Anyone Know why radi has fallen out of favour?Probably one of our best players under mighty billy.

  16. Posted by rippey89 on February 1st, 2012, 13:38

Raddy was excellent in his loan spell but since McGugan forced his way into the side he’s never really found any sort of form. He has spells where he looks ok but with the dearth of central players we have he always gets forced out wide where he goes missing for the majority of the match, it’s a shame he’s not getting a chance but he was in the team a lot when Cotterill first came and did very little to warrant being there, so it’s not too hard to see why he’s been dropped, even if it’s harsh he can’t get back in.

Thing is, the LMA is essentially a trades union funded by, and mandated to, protect the interests of its members (managers).

I do agree that managers need time, and generally you’d only judge a manager after they have had at least one summer and pre-season.

That said – there is a very legitimate question: How bad do results have to get, and for how long, before a manager’s position is untenable?

I dont know if it is the end for Cotterill, but it would be good to know what the minimum standard the club is prepared to accept is?

I do think O’Driscoll is an inspired signing, and between him and the new loan players (Guediora looked class) we need to give a chance of improvement.

Statistically though, if we don’t pick up more than 3 points in the next 3 games we would have to get more points per game than the league leaders for the rest of the season to avoid the drop, so it’s game over.

    It’s now or never.

  18. Posted by Nick Spencer on February 1st, 2012, 13:51

Radi and Derbyshire have both fallen out of favour with cotter-nil, and therfore arent getting a kick… I really dont think its Cotter-nil’s fault, I think whatever manager came in would have the same problems.. Forest are a club in crisis. If Forest fans want to really protest they should boycot the games… an empty ground would set the alarm bells ringing!!PLEASE FIND A BUYER DOUGHTY and leave us ‘FANS’ to support the club.

  19. Posted by billy warnock on February 1st, 2012, 14:16

Leeds have sacked Grayson and look where they are!!!
I agree with Husky Red, Cotterill should have some minimum job objectives one of which should be if you are in the bottom 3 for more than a month or you fail to score at home in ‘x’ number of games you have to resign without compensation. Just our luck to appoint a new Chairman who (ex LMA)who will put up with almost everything. Get Cotterill out now, before we get relegated -if we arent already.
If not I agree Nick Spencer boycott the games.

    Cotterill is crap !

  21. Posted by Pompey German on February 1st, 2012, 14:40

I am sorry to tell you this but ask any Pompey fan and you will not find one who rated him at all. He did not keep us up, the players did !He has no idea and makes lame excuses for every single defeat.

  22. Posted by BOBBY BOBBY on February 1st, 2012, 15:17

Its ok saying put him on gardening leave but what if he doesn’t like gardening or isnt very good at it?

  23. Posted by Andy Kirk on February 1st, 2012, 15:37

Look at the last 10 years, our cheif execative Mark Arther has been adviseing Nigel Doughty how to take the club forward, or is that backwards,Until Arther goes we shall carry on going backwards and he dosent careless, if he did he would have gone years ago.

Ive been watching Forest since 1967 and I cant remmember a worse Manager in all that time and weve had a few, ask Arther he hired them.

Has for Cotterill, he’s out of his league, cant get the respect of the players, thats the issue, you have to be able to motivate and he cant.
    Bring back Billy URGENTLY?

  24. Posted by Peter Hedges on February 1st, 2012, 16:12

Billy’s not coming back so stop asking for it. Frank Clarke needs to speak to Cotterill and tell him to keep it simple, stop tinkering, play players in their right positions and be more positive.

  25. Posted by Tatz on February 1st, 2012, 16:56

Am i the only one who doesnt want billy back and was glad to see him go. Ever since he said he would jump ship if celtic came calling, that was it for me. I want a manager who wants to stay and make a home here. As for cotteril, he seems limpwristed and weak. Hes the wrong man for the job. He must have lied through his teeth in the interview. I mean he was hardly working wonders at pompey. If the players lack motivation, im sure some lads from A block could talk them round. Get em in for a few team talks and pull their heads out their arses. I think cotteril should move aside and become franks clark 2nd in command. Frank would do better as manager, after all he did well for us after cloughie left. He loves the club and thats what we really need. Someone who puts the club first and feels a connection for it like we all do

  26. Posted by billy warnock on February 1st, 2012, 16:59

If Frank Clark has to tell his manager to ‘keep it simple, stop tinkering, play players in their right positions and be more positive’. Then his manager is not capable or good enough of running my sons under 7′s team for gods sake.
CotterNill is useless get him out.
Why shouldnt we speak about getting Billy back? If it means Doughty and Arthur would have to go first then brilliant that is what we need surely. The more we try the more we ‘might’ succeed, because if we dont the more these people will kill this football club

  27. Posted by Flinty_101 on February 1st, 2012, 18:31

Lots of good comments on ere n I agree with most of them! But I’m sorry tatz u don’t share my view billy warnocks spot on shout it from the roof tops doughty sell n BRING OUR BILLY BACK! PLEASE! God help us sunday but I’ll keep the faith n be watching through my fingers!

  28. Posted by Andrew on February 1st, 2012, 21:41

We would not do worse if Clark himself was manager. Doughty got us into this over 10 years with plenty of cash but little intelligence where it counts. His footballing decisions and the things he has backed have been very poor. He is the classic fan buying the club. Cotterill has no clue and we will go down under him. We will be in League One for a while too I would bet. The demise of Forest is heartbreaking to watch but there are no good answers to our problems.

  29. Posted by Timmy P on February 2nd, 2012, 13:29

Please stop this Bily Back nonsense! He is not really interested in coming back.

Billy plays the media very well and some Forest fans are very gullible.

All Billy has been doing in the media the last few weeks is raising his profile to secure his next job. (hopefully at Leeds, where he can further screw their finances too!)
Billy does not love this club. Billy loves Billy.

He openly courted the Celtic job whilst at Forest. Now with Billy being a Rangers man – I find that very strange?! Perhaps he knew that Doughty was growing tired of him and used this as a ploy to further annoy him? (Remember Doughty being furious at Paul Hart for openly going for jobs at Leeds & West Ham whilst still in charge at Forest?)
    So let Billy go.

We do need to get rid of that clueless Cotteril though..
