This evening’s big news is the acquisition of former Blackburn Rovers forward Matt Derbyshire. He is a player I always liked when he was up in Lancashire, and while I am not sure whether he is quite suited to playing as a lone striker, he certainly has a good turn of pace, decent shot and good finishing ability, so if (and it’s still a big if) the midfield can supply him with chances, I would be confident that he can score some goals for us.
Interestingly, Derbyshire confirmed the news himself via Twitter, a good couple of hours before the official site announced it.
Last night, the Reds edged out our closest neighbours on penalties, after a screamer by Wes Morgan saved our bacon with the last kick of the match. We were not at the match, nor were we able to follow it on the night, so rather than pretend to know anything, I would respectfully direct you to NFFCBlog’s report. The one thing I can confirm is that Wes’ goal was fantastic, and out of absolutely nowhere!
Steve McClaren was quizzed about the failed transfer of Wesley Verhoek in his post-match interview; sensibly, the gaffer pointed out that it was better that the Dutchman pulled out before putting pen to paper, rather than wanting to leave in a couple of months’s time, which was a point that Mark Arthur made yesterday. I would also suggest that, as a family man, I can understand why Verhoek chose not to move to a country in the midst of mindless rioting and looting (although I suspect that was not the only reason).
However, there is still no news about the proposed transfer of Ishmael Miller; whispers suggest that he is keen on a move but I suppose it is difficult to negotiate a suitable salary with someone who is currently on £20k per week.
