In recent times I have tried not to comment too much on speculation (hence my last post), but we cannot ignore the (admittedly) sketchy information that emerged on last night’s Matchtalk.
Firstly, Colin Fray asserted that there will be some kind of statement from the club in the next week or so; intriguingly, Fray reckons that some people won’t be happy with it. Also, perhaps as a riposte to the Doughty-haters, the chairman has apparently ploughed £10million into the club in the last year, and that there is “no chance” of a takeover. Interestingly, Colin Slater asserted that, just because there has only been one player coming in, it does not suggest that the Acquisitions Panel isn’t working.

Some have suggested that Colin Fray was taking a rather firm stance in defence of Doughty; I am not sure that I am qualified enough to comment (I don’t usually listen to Matchtalk as I find the ranting of many of the callers to be rather off-putting), but he did something that many callers/Internet commentators don’t do, which was offer an informed standpoint (I wouldn’t categorise it as fact, but possibly more than just opinion).
I am certainly not going to try and second-guess what the statement will be – there are plenty of people speculating on that elsewhere. What I do predict, is that whatever the content of said statement, there will definitely be unhappy fans, but I would assert that this is the nature of football fans (probably not just at Forest). I would also agree that it is highly unlikely that Doughty has decided not to invest in the club anymore, merely that (for whatever reason), not all of that money has been spent on players (and I would imagine that a decent chunk of that will have funded last summer’s influx of signings).
I will respectfully leave you with some food for thought on the subject of cynical fans, courtesy of Huxley on the LTLF forum:
“People won’t like [the statement] because you people don’t like anything. Not happy if we don’t sign anyone, not happy if we pay over the odds, not happy if we sign rubbish, not happy if the club offer cheap deals to members, not happy about a half full ground, not happy about kids for a quid, not happy in general.”
