Immediate thoughts on the Mark Arthur interview

Published on September 8th, 2010

As I’m sure you’re all aware, Mark Arthur‘s interview on the Transfer Window fiasco is now available.

These are my immediate thoughts (so may change on reflection):

The club blatantly had no Plan B if it failed in its primary targets.

Eric Barnes recruited Nigel Doughty?
I thought it was the other way round. If true, then Doughty really did rescue us from a financial meltdown.

We take about £7m in gates, plus (rumoured) £1m in sponsorship, plus (rumoured) half a million from the TV.
Doughty put in £13m last year – so that’s over £20m in income.
What are the costs? How much are our wages in comparison to other Championship clubs?

The squad is too thin – we finished 3rd because we overachieved.
Is it spin or does Mark Arthur really believe that we can repeat that feat?

(personal opinion) I suspect Doughty’s had enough.
The club’s a money-sink and a thankless task. Having said that – I didn’t hear a threat to quit – just a “not sure if he’ll bother putting in so much money any more”.
If he does quit, anyone else who takes over will want a return on their investment (even Abramovich is expecting Chelsea to make a profit), so that worries me greatly.
