Newsflash – Forest to leave the City Ground

As reported by BBC News - apparently this is the reason that there will be a news conference later today (Wednesday).

UPDATE (10.30):

The new stadium plans are announced, alongside the A453. Not sure how I feel about it, as it might be a bit weird going somewhere other than the CG for home games. However, parking near the CG is increasingly a problem, and it is a little bit laborious getting from my parent’s home in Wollaton to the CG by public transport – particularly midweek. The other problem is the little-reported issue of redevelopment of the City Ground – the peculiar shape of the Bridgford Stand is down to light regulations, so that the houses behind would not be in the shadow of the ground. The club have apparently tried to buy the adjoining land and properties to get around this problem, but to no avail. So any new Main Stand would be constricted due to lack of space.

Given these potential restrictions, and the perceived costs of redeveloping the existing ground in a piecemeal fashion, I can understand the logic behind a new stadium. The other question is why didn’t they do it years ago, when the proposal was there to build on the old Wilford Power Station?

I am sure we will hear many opinions on this issue on fans’ forums everywhere.

UPDATE 2:

The Guardian also have a report, including this nugget:

Intriguingly, Derby County, Forest’s main rivals, have just announced plans to redevelop Pride Park and increase the capacity from 33,500 to 44,000. The suspicion at Forest is that Derby have got wind of their plans and are keen for their own stadium to be regarded as the most impressive football arena in the east Midlands. Forest, however, are confident their famous past will stand in their favour.

Forest to play Bournemouth at home on the opening day of the season

Jason Crowe turns down the Reds to remain with the Cobblers

Also: If you look at the Nottingham Evening Post website, you will find that there are a lot of people moaning on the comments board. This is nothing unusual, but bearing in mind recent revelations about “signings on their way”, it might be worth reminding the more discerning reader that the NEP is a commercial enterprise; the more outlandish stories they print, the higher the sales figures. There has been no official comment from the club about Leon Best, Jason Crowe or anyone else. Remember that the NEP tried to make us believe that Roberto Baggio was on his way…

Some good news at last

Neil Lennon has signed!

I’m impressed with that one (especially as Roy Keane was in the hunt) … now who’s next Colin?

Forest on Wikipedia

Many of you will be familiar with the online resource Wikipedia, which is essentially an encyclopedia that “anyone can edit”. Unfortunately it seems as though a malicious Derby fan has decided to edit the entry for Nottingham Forest (warning: fans of Andy Reid may get offended!); if you scroll through the full entry, you will also see that they have made some reference to Derby’s ground being bigger than the CG.

I am off to look at the Derby County entry to see if there has been any tit-for-tat…

Jack Lester

I wanted to echo the thoughts of many other Forest supporters re: Jack. He has signed for Chesterfield, so it seems as though he has decided to remain in the area, possibly at the expense of continuing his career at League One level. Let’s not forget that he is from Sheffield, and lives in Nottingham – so Chesterfield is probably quite a good location.

I was sorry to see Jack leave, but I agree with many others; for all the fight, endeavour and occasional creativity that Jack brings to the team, his disciplinary record both on and off the pitch may well have contributed to his release. Certainly his booking ratio of one every three appearances (13 yellow cards in 29 starts and 16 sub appearances) was not good enough, and allegations of drunken “asbo” behaviour off the pitch (admittedly a number of other players were also accused) will not have helped his image. Further to that, although stats never tell the full story, he only scored seven goals in forty-five appearances.

Nonetheless, I would like to wish Jack all the best up the road at Chesterfield – I am confident that he will get into double figures in terms of both goals and bookings next season, and will become a real hero.

Still on the subject of Chesterfield, it seems that they have got in a bit of a mard about our blogging colleague at Through the seasons before us

Stanley Victor

Stan was great. Fantastic talent. Thrown away (along with some serious mental health issues).

But this is pretty good stuff.

Grant Holt Update

After my mini-rant about the lack of communication from the club regarding the current speculation, we are now finally told that Grant has submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected.

This is interesting

According to BBC Sport, Forest are the favourites to sign Neil Lennon, as a player-coach. Can’t say I predicted that one. Might explain the reports (still unconfirmed) about Charlie having left the club. Even at 35, I would imagine that Lennon could be the man to boss the midfield that we have been sorely lacking – League One is about equivalent to SPL, no? :-)
